From Gesturing and Beyond: Kinesiological Perspectives for Sign Language Users

In this workshop, learners will be exposed to the intersectionality between Kinesiology and Sign Language, in general. The main content of this workshop will center around concepts such as, basic biomechanical & ergonomic principles, movement production & nativity, along with injury prevention & career longevity. Presentation style is highly interactive and will include devoted time for guided-practice and immediate application of knowledge.

Purpose:

This workshop has been designed by a seasoned interpreter and educator, with the purpose of being highly accessible to anyone who has signing abilities, as it is not strictly reserved for interpreters. The only requirement for audience participation is to possess some knowledge of any type of signed language system. However, the most
appropriate target-audience are signed language interpreters.

The unique aspect of this workshop is in its approach to language and movement through the use of hands-on exercises, immediate feedback return, and application of real-world knowledge transfer. The main purpose of this workshop is to assist interpreters in extending their career longevity by providing beneficial tools to do so.

The goals of the workshop are defined as follows:

  • Expose learners to new movement vocabulary and principles
  • Allow learners a safe space to discuss movement habits and tendencies
  • Provide learners with strategies for improving faculty of movement and apply to signing
  • Incorporate self-evaluation/awareness tools, and rehabilitation/prevention modalities necessary for career longevity

About the Presenter

Dr. Davis C. Dyke is a Certified National Interpreter with a Ph.D. in Kinesiology and a Master’s degree in Biomechanics. As an ASL teacher, personal trainer, and seasoned sign language interpreter with extensive experience in various settings, including Video Relay Service (VRS), he brings a unique perspective to the interpreting community. His work has spanned academic, military, professional, and athletic spaces, including founding and leading an ASL Club at the collegiate level to foster community and language growth.

Dr. Dyke is passionate about promoting healthy, native-like movement patterns to ensure career longevity and prevent injury for interpreters, ASL users, and occupational injuries in general. This workshop entitled, “From Gesturing and Beyond: Kinesiological Perspectives for Sign Language Users,” is the first of a 3-part workshop series that highlights the critical intersection of movement science and sign language expression. Through hands-on exercises and real-world applications, Dr. Dyke aims to equip participants with strategies and the ability to recognize and adopt/adapt natural movement patterns, enhancing both personal well-being and professional performance long-term.

Known for his interactive and engaging teaching style, Dr. Dyke brings enthusiasm, compassion, and practical expertise to every session. He has mentored professional interpreters, ASL students, and Deaf athletes, all with the emphasis on the importance of mindful, native-like movements. His mission is to help others move intentionally and without fear of injury so they can excel in their careers and maintain job satisfaction.
