Our Rome team can help you with any of your sign language interpreting needs. The coordinating staff provides you with the right interpreting services based on your specific needs and are dedicated to bridging the communication gap for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

The Director

Michelle Brewer

Director of Interpreting Services

Michelle Brewer is a nationally certified interpreter who has been with Interpretek since 2002. Originally from Rome, NY, she came to Rochester with the goal of becoming an Interpreter after obtaining AAS degrees in Chemical Dependency Counseling and Human Services. After graduating from National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) with her AAS degree in ASL-English Interpretation, she immediately began her career at Interpretek as a Coordinator.

Throughout her career in the Rochester, NY community, Michelle has been fortunate to take advantage of the opportunities presented to her by interpreting in a variety of settings. Also, she has proudly served on the board of the Genesee Valley Region of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (GVRRID), the Local Partner Advisory Board for The National Center for Deaf Health Research (NCDHR), and the Advisory Board for the American Sign Language and Interpreting Education (ASLIE) department at NTID.

Michelle is committed to Interpretek’s values and works to inspire and support others in doing the same. She has a passion for the Deaf community and interpreting community, as well as Interpretek’s consumers, customers, employees, and Interpretek as a whole. After serving various roles at Interpretek through the years, Michelle is currently a Director of Interpreting Services and leading three of the long-standing service areas.

The Coordinators

Gabby Griffin

Coordinator

Gabby Griffin was born and raised in Rome, NY where she started learning about ASL and Deaf culture from playing on the NYSSD’s girls basketball team. In 2011, she graduated from Daemen College with a bachelor’s degree in Natural Science Health Science. Gabby went on to get her Educational Interpreting AAS from Mohawk Valley Community College two years later.

With those degrees, she began freelance interpreting with Interpretek in 2013. In 2014, Gabby decided to join the Interpretek family as a coordinator/staff interpreter just after getting married. She continues to grow her ASL skills with the goal of getting a national certification. While working at Interpretek, she obtained her Notary Public license and enjoys learning new tricks to make things simpler for the coordinating team.

In her spare time, Gabby teaches yoga, plays the clarinet in community bands, plays board games, and spends time with her family.

Jennifer Yousey

Coordinator

Jennifer Yousey decided to start learning ASL in 2011 to be able to communicate with a Deaf family member. She went to Mohawk Valley Community College and graduated with an AAS in Educational Interpretation in 2017. After graduating, she started interpreting for Interpretek in the Fall of 2017.

Jennifer transitioned to a coordinator position in August of 2021 and is committed to being a good representation of the company. She works remotely from South Dakota, so she can enjoy her favorite things, the outdoors and hiking!

Maria Wyman

Coordinator

Maria Wyman is a nationally certified interpreter from Oneonta, NY. She took her first ASL classes at Hudson Valley Community College and later graduated from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in ASL-English Interpretation. While at RIT, she also received a certificate in Performing Arts.

Maria became a Staff Interpreter for the Rochester office at Interpretek in the Fall of 2017 and started coordinating soon after. She freelanced for one year in 2022 and currently works remotely to coordinate for the Rome, Kansas City, and Rochester offices. In her free time, she enjoys reading, traveling, streaming new movies and tv shows, and spending time with her family.
