Basic Conversational ASL 101 Online Class

Dates: Tuesdays, June 16th – August 25th
Time: 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm

A great way to start your journey to learning ASL!

In this introductory course, students will learn the basics of American Sign Language, be exposed to Deaf Culture, and begin to learn about norms of the Deaf Community.

Alphabet
Fingerspelling
Basic number production
Simple grammatical structures
Ways to introduce themselves
How to exchange some personal information

We offer six American Sign Language class courses to help bridge the gap between the hearing and Deaf community. These courses start with learning the basics of ASL like the alphabet, fingerspelling and numbers all the way to narrating stories and discussing goals.

Basic Conversational ASL 102

In this course, students will continue learning ASL strategies and implement them within narratives.

Faster fingerspelling
Numbers to indicate age and time expressions
Describing living situations, common places and giving basic directions
Creating personal narratives
Talking about family
Forming questions

Basic Conversational ASL 103

In the third course, students will discuss favorite activities and hobbies to learn about tenses, narratives, and facial cues.

Learn present, past and future tenses
Introduced to classifiers
Share short narratives about yourself and others
Understand the importance of facial cues
Fingerspelling practice
Deaf culture will be woven throughout the course

Advanced Conversational ASL 201

In this course, students will continue to learn about classifiers, how to describe people and conversational strategies.

Describe people, traits & personal items
Culturally appropriate greetings
Learn about leave-takings within the Deaf community
Conversational strategies like explaining, requesting, asking for advice & agreements

Advanced Conversational ASL 202

In the second advanced course, students will continue learning more vocabulary and new types of classifiers in ASL.

Describe places in their neighborhood
Give directions
Make purchases
Give opinions
Introduce strategies for interrupting & using role shift

Advanced Conversational ASL 203

In the final course, students will be expected to produce and comprehend longer periods of discourse.

Discuss personal goals & abilities
Share reactions
Narrate stories
Incorporate vocabulary & grammar learned in previous courses
Deaf culture will be woven into the course
